Hi, I'm Warren Willimams, I'm from Sydney and I've been a professional bass player and music enthusiast for over 45 years. I started off learning by ear and it has been my main method of learning basslines all this time. I played guitar for 10 years professionally as well, and again, my ears served me well. I've played in everything from duo's to jazz big bands to original bands, but most of the time it's been in 4 - 6 piece covers bands. I have no formal training, and instead have learned organically over a long time. I had good technique, feel and groove, good mentors, and by learning Bass by Ear, learned the exact basslines on the song. It was a great way for me to learn to play by copying some of the best bass players in the world. Over time I learned the theory behind what I was playing, and while it's been helpful, most musicians I've played with, even very good ones, have no idea about why the notes they play actually work and serve the song.

I've lived and performed all over Sydney, but have made the Inner West my home for many years now. It's got a great music scene - full of venues, bands, rehearsal studios, and jam nights. My teaching studio is in my home, where I conduct private 1 on 1 lessons tailored to the students needs. I teach bass to adults and teens, from intermediate musicians to curious beginners, and I bring a unique methodology focused on the art of playing by ear and the thrill of playing what you hear on the fretboard.

My students often appreciate my tailored lessons, and the follow-up materials I provide after each lesson. These days there are some very useful online tools that I'll show you how to use to help with playing Bass by Ear. You don't need sheet music or hundreds of scales. Did you know that almost every pop song ever written uses no more than 4 scales? I'll show you them as we develop your ears.

When I’m not teaching, you’ll probably find me around the Inner West, catching live music or connecting with other musicians who share my appreciation for the unfiltered sound of real, live performances. I'm still performing, and encourage musicians I meet to keep the soul in music and support face-to-face jams in a world of AI-generated beats.
